“Go LED,” says Matt. “It’s a no brainer.” Swapping out incandescent light bulbs for LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs can save hundreds of dollars over the course of the bulb’s lifetime, which can be an astounding 10 to 20 years or more. According to the DOE (Department of Energy), replacing just five of your home’s most-used bulbs with ENERGY STAR LEDs will save $75 in the first year. Other worthwhile fixes: tie dimmers and timers to interior lights and motion detectors to outdoor fixtures. And, of course, always flip the switch when you leave the room.
