Custom features and fine craftsmanship distinguish this hewn-log home, located in southwest Alabama, not far from the owners’ primary residence. The couple fancied a retreat for study, reflection and solitude, away from their busy routines, but also a special place where they might entertain clients, friends and family in comfort.
To take advantage of the Alabama climate, they also desired plenty of outdoor living, which this home delivers with more than 2,000 square feet of outside living space, highlighted by an open-air great room and wraparound porch.
The home uses 6-by-12-inch square eastern white pine logs, with dovetail corners and a hand-hewn finish. The owners wanted to use a mix of natural materials and textures and supplemented the logs with timbers and shingle-faced dormers.
Rooms also feature character posts. Stonework supports timber posts on the outside. A prominent metal roof tops the home. Renewable and repurposed materials were used, and pre-manufactured systems and elements reduced job-site waste.
Overall, the custom design manages to combine rustic and contemporary, achieving strength and warmth. The layout offers plenty of versatility, allowing for bonus rooms on the lower and upper levels to be converted to bedrooms.
