A South Dakota Log Home Gets a Custom Touch

Born from a stock floor plan, this South Dakota customized log home is a true treasure

Written by Donna Peak

What do you do when you’ve had enough of the California rat race? You head for the hills. In this case, the Black Hills of South Dakota; and the owners struck gold — Golden Eagle Log Homes, that is.

With family ties to the Mount Rushmore State, the owners wanted a home that could play host to relatives and friends, fit in seamlessly with their breathtaking 41-acre property and take in their sweeping tri-state views.

With Golden Eagle’s “Country’s Best” model as a starting point and the company’s team of talented designers at the ready, the owners increased its size, tweaked the layout and added a finished walkout, decks and balconies. The result is 5,781 square feet of finished living space, including four bedrooms, five baths, a family room, theater room/arcade, a five-stall garage and an octagonal breakfast room, which is the owner’s favorite space to unwind with his morning coffee and the newspaper.

Choosing Golden Eagle Log Homes’ all- inclusive home package, the house is built with full 10-inch diameter, hand-peeled, double-round white pine logs stained with Perma-Chink’s Ultra 7 exterior stain in “Caramel.” The Semco windows are clad in “Hartford Green,” tying into the dark verdigris of the Owens Corning shingled roof.

Inside, the home is impeccably detailed. The flooring throughout the main and upper levels is rustic hickory, except for the bathrooms, which are finished in a slate-look tile. The semi-custom cabinetry in the kitchen and the bathrooms are alder and are finished with a clear-coat sealant to show off the wood’s natural tones. The home’s two fireplaces, the kitchen island and the master bath’s tub surround are all clad in a stone blend called “River Rock Shore.”

But for all its indoor splendor, where the home truly makes its impact is outside. From the property’s six decks, patios, porches and balconies, the family can take in the quiet seclusion of the South Dakota countryside and watch the eagles soar.
