Log homes aren’t just about the logs. There’s also how they’re featured in the home’s design. The owners of this three-story home in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley blended D-shape white pine logs with elegant timber elements to create a second home where their whole family could gather for annual celebrations and vacations. Though surrounded by woods, it is recognizably not a cabin.
Still, inside and out, it’s all about wood. The 7-1/4-by-8-inch D logs have curved exteriors, suggesting a full-round look, accented by shady porch roofs. Inside, they’re finished flat to match the graceful timbers and set the stage for the furnishings.
Their combined strength allows warm openness that encourages gatherings. The owners worked out details of their custom design with their log-home company’s in-house design staff. The owner served as the general contractor.
The surrounding porches provide ample outdoor living areas, with access to a swimming pool. The oversized screened-in porch contains a wood-burning stove, hot tub and several outdoor areas, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, complete with fireplace.
The basement is less open than the main floor, but it accommodates additional living space, which includes a gym, a sauna, a full bar, a home theater and more living space. To make getting around all three levels, the home has an elevator. For when the whole family shows up, guest quarters are above the detached garage and in three log-cabin hotel-style rooms built adjacent to the main house.
