Architects take pride in seeing their creations turned into actual buildings, even more so when it’s their own home. Such was the case with this custom home, located in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

He and his wife wanted a home that blended traditional and contemporary styling. They chose high-end finishes for the kitchen and the baths and used Sheetrock on a couple of interior walls for splashes of color. The layout presents some intriguing angles.

The main center of the home is offset from the bedroom suites, for example. You enter into a hallway. To the left are the great room, kitchen and loft. To the right is the wing with the bedroom suites.

The home features 8-by-10-inch cedar wall logs, milled with twin tongue and grooves and full saddle-notch corners. They’re supplemented by rough-finished log posts and trusses that enrich the home’s character. Board and batten on the upper exterior flatters the logs. Inside, the great stone fireplace is a strong focal point, and all the bright colors enliven the interior and complement the wood hues.
