Building a lakeside log home in southwest Michigan fulfilled a lifelong dream for the owners of this home. The wife had been spending summers there with her parents since the 1960s, staying in a rented cottage. She introduced her husband to the lake in the mid-1990s. They continued coming as a couple, knowing that someday they would retire there.
In 2006, they bought their hillside property overlooking the lake, sat in two Adirondack chairs where their future great room would go and toasted to their future on the lake.
For this Michigan lakeside log home, the couple wanted a home that blended with the nature of the surrounding woods and the lake, a place, they said, “built with the hill as opposed to on the hill.”
Because they love entertaining and hosting large gatherings of family and friends, they favored a layout that was roomy but cozy. The home is built with milled northern white cedar logs and features additional wood throughout, notably for the ceiling with log rafters and two custom log staircases. The home also has log stairs leading to the beach.
True to their word, the owners throw weekend gatherings six or so times a year, housing 20 to 25 guests each time. There are beds for 23, located in two large bunkrooms on the lower level, three bedrooms on the upper level and the main-level master suite.
